Diving Deep into Compressed Air

April 28, 2025

Ethan Day, Apprentice Engineer

Stepping into Cambs Compressors as an apprentice was a plunge into a world I knew little about, but I was eager to learn. The engineering and maintenance apprenticeship here offers a fantastic blend of academic study at Cambs Regional College (CRC) and practical, hands-on experience alongside skilled engineers. Every day is different, which I love, and the team is incredibly supportive.

The Quoting Challenge: More Than Just Numbers

My role in the quoting team has been a real learning curve. It’s not just about producing a price; it’s about understanding the entire scope of a job. I’ve learned to think like an engineer, visualising the work from start to finish. This involves estimating time, parts, and anticipating potential challenges. For instance, when quoting for a compressor repair, I have to consider the specific model, potential faults, and the time required to diagnose and fix the issue. I have to ask myself, “What tools and spares might be needed? What are the likely complications?” This deep dive into the practical aspects of each job has significantly improved my problem-solving skills and given me a real appreciation for the complexities of compressed air systems.

Visualising the Work: From Quote to Completion

The quoting process is a crucial step in ensuring we deliver accurate and efficient solutions to our customers. I’m learning to anticipate the needs of our field engineers, ensuring they have the right information and resources to complete each job. This involves not only understanding the technical aspects but also considering logistical factors, such as travel time and site access. By thoroughly analysing each job, I’m helping to ensure that our quotes are accurate and that our engineers are well-prepared.

A Diverse Portfolio: Learning Something New Every Day

Cambs Compressors’ diverse portfolio of services adds another layer of complexity and interest to my apprenticeship. We handle everything from routine maintenance to complex installations and air treatment solutions. While I’m not yet qualified to cost up full installations, I support the experienced engineers by preparing Bills of Materials (BoMs) for projects. This exposure to different facets of the business has broadened my understanding of the industry and the various solutions we provide.

My apprenticeship has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Every day is a learning opportunity. I’m constantly absorbing new information, developing my skills, and gaining valuable experience. Working at Cambs Compressors has not only given me a solid foundation in engineering but also instilled in me a passion for problem-solving and a deep appreciation for the complexities of compressed air systems. I’m excited to see what the future holds and continue growing alongside this fantastic team.
