How Our 4-Day Work Week is a Win for All
At Cambs Compressors, we believe in finding smarter ways to work—both for our employees and our customers. That’s why, 12 months ago, we introduced a 4-day working week for our field engineers.
This wasn’t about reducing service levels or cutting hours. Instead, we designed a system that allows our engineers to work slightly longer days while maintaining full coverage for our customers Monday through to Friday. By splitting our team into two groups, we ensure that while some enjoy their extended weekends, others are still on hand to keep our clients’ systems running smoothly.
Now, a year in, the benefits are clear—for our business, our employees, and, most importantly, our customers.
Stronger Service, Smarter Scheduling
From an operational perspective, this change has been a game-changer. With engineers working longer shifts on their scheduled days, we have greater flexibility in scheduling jobs, reducing downtime for clients, and ensuring faster response times. Urgent callouts are handled more efficiently, and planned maintenance can be scheduled to better suit customer needs.
Plus, with 50% of our engineers available every Monday and Friday, we’ve struck the right balance—offering extended breaks to our team without compromising service levels.
A Happier, More Engaged Team
We introduced the 4-day work week as a benefit for our employees, and it’s proven to be just that. Having three days off every week means our engineers have more time to rest, recharge, and spend with their families. It’s helped with work-life balance, reduced stress, and increased overall job satisfaction.
One of the key aspects of this initiative is that it’s only available to employees who have been with us for at least 12 months. This not only rewards commitment but also ensures that those adopting the new schedule have a solid foundation of experience with our customers and processes.
The result? A team that’s more motivated, more engaged, and delivering even better service.
The Client Advantage
For our customers, this change has only strengthened the service we provide. With engineers working slightly longer days, they can complete more in-depth maintenance visits and see jobs through more efficiently. This means fewer return visits and minimal disruption to our clients’ operations.
Longer working days also allow for greater flexibility in scheduling, meaning we can accommodate customer needs more effectively—particularly for those who require early morning or later afternoon appointments.
Looking Ahead
One year in, it’s clear that the 4-day work week has been a success. Our employees are happier, our operations are more efficient, and our customers are seeing real benefits. It’s proof that by rethinking traditional work structures, businesses can create a win-win for everyone involved.
At Cambs Compressors, we’re committed to finding innovative ways to support both our people and our clients. And as we continue to refine and improve how we work, one thing remains certain—our focus on delivering the best possible service, every single day.
