From Apprentices to Engineers: Developing home-grown talent at Cambs Compressors

July 1, 2026

The engineering sector continues to face a well-documented skills gap, with a shortage of qualified technicians entering the industry. At Cambs Compressors, we’re commited to doing our bit to address this by investing in apprenticeship programmes that give young people the opportunity to get hands-on and develop practical skills from day one.

For over 5 years we have worked in partnership with Cambridge Regional College to support apprentices through their Level 3 Service & Maintenance Apprenticeship Scheme – an initiative designed to equip mechanically minded individuals with the technical expertise required to thrive in the compressed air industry.

Jordan Baker was among the first to benefit from this pathway, beginning his apprenticeship in 2021. Over the course of three years, he developed a strong foundation in servicing, diagnostics, and maintenance of compressed air systems. After successfully completing the programme in 2024, Jordan has remained with the business and progressed into a fully qualified, factory-trained engineer, now delivering expert support to our customers.

Following a similar path, Ethan Day joined Cambs Compressors in 2022 and completed his apprenticeship in 2025. Throughout his training, Ethan demonstrated both technical aptitude and a strong work ethic, earning recognition for his practical skills and problem-solving ability. He now joins the service team as a qualified engineer, contributing to the company’s reputation for reliable and professional service.

Here’s what General Manager Richard Bachini had to say about the apprenticeship schemes:

“Bringing apprentices into the business and supporting them to gain formal qualifications which set them up for a career in the compressed air industry is something we’re really passionate about. Seeing Jordan and Ethan grow into their roles has been a proud moment for us – they are both great examples of what can be achieved with the right attitude and support behind them.

By investing in apprenticeships, we are addressing the industry-wide skills gap whilst ensuring that our own engineers are trained to the highest standards from the outset. This approach allows us to maintain the consistent service quality our customers expect by fostering a team of engineers who understand both the technical and customer-facing aspects of the role.
